You might be in the middle of a number talk, and your students just don’t seem to know how to explain their thinking or put their ideas into words. It can feel frustrating when you know they’re capable, but they just need the right tools to express their thoughts.
In this post, we’ll explore how a Math Talk Poster can provide students with the language they need to confidently participate in Math Talks. We’ll see how this simple tool can guide your students to explain their thinking, actively listen, and engage in respectful math conversations.
I used to think teaching math meant I needed to be the “knower of all things”—the one who would explain everything while my students sat quietly, absorbing the information. That was the math instruction of the past, and I was guilty of it.
But then, I realized something powerful: students learn math by talking about math.
Now, instead of a silent classroom, there’s a buzz of conversation as students share their strategies, explain their thinking, and learn from one another. The shift is incredible, and one of the key tools I use to support this transformation is a Math Talk Poster. This poster, displayed prominently in my classroom, gives students sentence starters that help them jump into discussions with confidence.
Math Talks are short, 10-15 minute sessions designed to engage students in meaningful discussions about math. These talks give students opportunities to think critically, explain their reasoning, and justify their answers, which not only deepens their understanding but also builds their confidence.
Math Talks are where students practice number sense, problem-solving strategies, and learn to respectfully discuss math with their peers.
One of the biggest barriers to student participation in Math Talks is not knowing how to begin. This is where sentence starters come in. By using a Math Talk Poster with sentence starters, you give your students a helpful scaffold to start conversations and keep them going.
Math Talk Posters help students in four key ways:
Creating your own Math Talk Poster is simple! You can use an anchor chart or display speech bubbles with sentence starters. But don’t stop at just posting it on the wall—actively use it in your classroom! Refer to it daily during Math Talks and encourage students to pick a sentence starter from the poster to engage in the conversation.
