Hey Friend!
Teaching math was not our favorite. We taught math traditionally with memorized steps and timed tests because we didn't know math could be fun. Read our story

If you’ve ever watched your students slowly count one-by-one to figure out an answer, you know how important it is to build their number sense. We want students to think flexibly about numbers, not just memorize facts.
That’s where Quick Images for Math Fluency come in—a simple but powerful visual math talk that helps students strengthen their ability to recognize and work with numbers efficiently.
Quick Images for Math Fluency is a visual-based math talk that helps students develop fluency through subitizing (instantly recognizing small groups) and groupitizing (seeing larger amounts as smaller groups).
During a Quick Image session, I quickly flash an image of a dot pattern, ten-frame, or other visual representation for just 2-3 seconds—not long enough to count one-by-one.
Students then discuss what they saw and how they saw it, strengthening their ability to see numbers in flexible ways.
This simple activity packs a big punch! When I started using Quick Images for Math Fluency in my classroom, I noticed huge benefits:
This five-minute routine can be a game-changer in your math instruction! Here’s how I do it:
@mathhappyhour Quick images is one of my favorite visual math talks for elementary kids because it is such a great way to visually connect concrete to abstract thinking. When objects are grouped in an organized way, students can recognize patterns and relationships and more easily mentally calculate amounts. This leads to building addition and multiplication fluency skills as students start to notice patterns with the visual representation of various amounts of objects. For example 2 groups of 6 is the same amount as 3 groups of 4 and 4 groups of 3. Visually making these connections helps students as they move toward more abstract number equations.

Since introducing Quick Images for Math Fluency, I’ve seen students become more flexible, confident, and excited about numbers. Instead of relying on rote memorization, they see math happening and make connections between numbers. It’s incredible to watch them shift from counting on fingers to recognizing patterns and explaining their reasoning.
